"Bird Song" Mixed-Media Birdhouse

My "Bird Song" Mixed-Media Birdhouse is featured on the Beacon Adhesives blog!   This piece was the result of a box of fabulous products sent to Beacon Makers which we were challenged to create something unique with.   I am pleased to say I used something from almost every manufacturer who contributed to the box!

I have nicknamed  it the "Bird Song" birdhouse because the papers used for the roof  are from the DCWV® Scripts & Music Notes collection of patterned papers which were included in the box.
I also used product from FloraCraft®, DecoArt® Inc., Clearsnap®, and of course, some of my favorite Beacon Adhesives!    Find the full stepped out instructions for this project, and for many other creative projects, here on the Beacon Adhesives Blog.

Iridescent Garden Fairy Cameo Pendant

Makin’s Clay® - Natural 60g
Makin's® Cutting Mat
Silver Flower Bezel -  Rou Romantique by Kristen Robinson for ICE Resin®
DecoArt® Americana® Acrylic - Foliage Green
DecoArt® Media® - Fluid Acrylic - Interference Green
Beacon® Power Tac Adhesive
May Arts® Leaf Ribbon - Green
Silver toggle jewelry closure
Jewelry pliers
Fine paintbrush

Use Natural Makin’s Clay® to make fairy using CreateAlong.com Fairy Cabochon Mold.

While clay is still fresh, apply a layer of Beacon Power Tac over entire inner section of bezel, being sure to have adhesive at the outer edges of the oval.  Power Tac is very strong, has no odor, and works wonderfully with Makin's Clay® and a variety of other materials. Carefully insert the cabochon and gently press down to adhere, taking care to be sure the edges are pushed flush with the edge of the bezel.  Makin’s Clay® has a very minuscule amount of shrinkage as it dries. By following these steps, you will ensure that the clay stays securely in place as it dries and does not shrink away from the edges of the bezel.

Create a wash with a small amount of Foliage Green DecoArt® Americana® Acrylic paint and water.   Use fine paint brush to paint clay area around fairy.

Let clay dry 24 hours.  Add leaf ribbon and closure to form necklace for pendant.

Optional:  I decided after the piece was finished it needed just a touch of iridescence.  To achieve that effect, I used my fingertip and applied a very light coat of DecoArt® Media® - Fluid Acrylic - Interference Green over the fairy - the result is a very subtle luminescence - just what I wanted to finish the piece!

I am really pleased with how this piece came out and am anxious to try the technique on more pieces - so watch for new versions soon!  It reminds me of glazed ceramic.  The full instructions are here on the Makin's Clay® blog.   I used Makin's Clay®, Clearsnap® ink, and JudiKins™ Diamond Glaze™.

Patriotic Projects Galore! Designer Crafts Connection Linky Party Time!

I'm a few days late in sharing, but this month the Designer Craft Connection Linky Party theme was Red, White and Blue!  You can find links to lots of creative patriotic ideas here on the DCC blog.  I shared my Mosaic Patriotic Star  and my Denim & Burlap Tattered American Flag wreath - but there are so many other creative ideas to inspire you - I'm sharing just a glimpse at a few below.   The 4th of July may have passed for this year, but it's never too late to celebrate America - I love to display patriotic home decor pieces all year.  And many of these ideas would also be great for Labor Day events too (although I want to push away the thought of Labor Day coming - that means summer is ending!)

Makin's Clay® Pink Octopus Pendant

It was love at first sight when I received this amazing Octopus silicone mold from CreateAlong.com - Octopus images are extremely popular right now - they are a major trend popping up everywhere in home decor, jewelry and other fashion pieces.   I've been having fun designing with the mold and just when I think I'm out of ideas, another pops in to my head!

Makin’s Clay® - White
CreateAlong.com Under the Sea Octopus Cabochon Mold
JudiKins™ Diamond Glaze™
Clearsnap® Smooch® - Taffy Pink, Frosted Aqua, Pool
Fine paintbrush
JudiKins™ Tidy Tray™
Small glass beads - white and pale blue
Jewelry wire, closure, jump ring
Jewelry pliers

Place white Makin’s Clay® in Octopus mold.  Use fingers to remove any excess clay and smooth clay into borders of mold.  Smooth back of clay.   Remove molded pendant and smooth side edges with fingers while clay is still fresh.   Let dry for about an hour.

Color octopus with Taffy pink Smooch® ink.  Color area around octopus and sides of oval with Pool and Frosted Aqua Smooch® ink.  Let ink dry.   Paint back with Pool and Frosted Aqua Smooch® ink.  Let dry.

Carefully make small hole with a needle at top of pendant for jump ring.  Let dry 24 hours.

Apply layer of Diamond Glaze over entire pendant (front and sides.)  Let dry.   Apply Diamond Glaze to back of pendant.  Let dry.

Cut jewelry wire to desired length for pendant.  Place glass beads in Tidy Tray, bead entire length of wire with clear and pale blue beads in a random pattern.  Add jewelry closure.

Add jump ring to pendant.  Attach to center of beaded necklace.
