In this episode of Creatively Crafty with Cindi McGee I show you two ways of molding Makin's Clay® to create this unique "Beneath the Waves" pendant.  First, I make a custom mold with real coral and Amazing Mold Putty, then I use an amazing octopus silicone mold from CreateAlong.com.

Mosaic Star Patriotic Door Decoration

This week for my Cindi's Simple Solutions project on When Creativity Knocks I'm sharing this patriotic mosaic star. A few materials, and a bit of patience, were all it took to create this large star perfect for display on your front door as the 4th of July approaches.

16” Smoothfoam™ Star
The Beadery® Value Pack Clearly Mosaics™ - Pearlized White
DecoArt® Americana® Crystal Gloss Enamels® - Blue, Red
DecoArt® Americana® Multi-Surface Satin™ - Red Hot
Beacon™ Mixed Media Glue™
Paint brush
Red satin cording

Beginning in the center of the Smoothfoam™ star, sketch or trace a smaller star shape in desired size.  Use Mixed Media Glue™ to mount pearlized white Clearly Mosaics™ to cover the star area.  Once star is filled in and defined, begin adding additional mosaic pieces and cover the entire surface of the star.

I wanted a glossy effect to the painted mosaic pieces, so Gloss Enamels® were the perfect choice.  Paint a row of mosaics with Red Crystal Gloss Enamels around entire star.  Let dry.

Paint remaining mosaics around center star with Blue Crystal Gloss Enamels®.  Let dry.

Paint the sides of the star with Red Hot Americana Multi-Surface Satin™ paint.  Let dry.

Use Mixed Media Glue™ to mount red satin cording around top edge of star.   Add loop on top point to hang star.

These days, both Zentangle and Adult Coloring Books are all the rage.   While I’ve spent a lifetime “doodling” designs on then back of envelopes, etc. while on the phone, I’ve yet to be able to truly master the art of Zentangle with results I am happy with.   So when this month’s Gel Press™ blog hop theme was Zentangle, I knew I had to come up with an alternative plan.   Google to the rescue!  I Googled “copyright free Zentangle printables” and found this “coloring book page”.  A cat, and flowers, two of my favorite things!  I had my answer.   The semi-translucent properties of Silks Acrylic Glaze meant I could create a beautiful mono printed background for the printed image in some of my favorite colors using my Gel Press™ plate.

Be sure to follow through and see what other Zentangle creations our designers are sharing.

Gel Press™ 8x10” Plate
ColourArte Silks Acrylic Glaze - Blue Bayou, Sea Spray, Meridian Blue, Olive Vine, Midori Melon, Kiwi
Prismacolor® colored pencils
Smoothfoam™ sheet
Beacon® Zip-Dry™, Fabri-Tac™
1” Light Blue grosgrain ribbon
Scissors, palette knife, brayer

Use palette knife to apply a very light amount of Silk paints to the 8x10” Gel Press™ plate.  Begin on the bottom, starting with Olive Vine, then Midori Melon, then Kiwi, then Blue Bayou, Meridian Blue and Sea Spray at the top.  Lightly brayer.  It will appear almost as if there is nothing on your Gel Press™ plate, as you are using a very small amount of glaze and it has a semi-translucent quality.

Place paper over plate and pull print.  Set aside to dry.

Size Zentangle image you wish to print to desired size.  My image is 7 x 9”.  Print directly onto gel printed paper.

Cut piece of Smoothfoam™ sheet to 7 x 9”.

Wrap print around Smoothfoam™ sheet, glueing in place on sides/back with Beacon® Zip Dry™.

Cut pieces of blue grosgrain ribbon to fit along each side.  Use Fabri-Tac™ to glue in place.

Make loop for hanging, glue centered on back top.

Use colored pencils in shades of greens & blues to lightly accent some areas of flowers.  Use green pencil to color cat’s eyes.
